Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026

Updated September 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice

Somewhere in America right now, a founder is adding up a federal tax bill, a state tax bill and a payroll tax bill, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of Americans make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.

So rather than simply tell you the UAE is better, I have put the two countries head to head on the six things people ask me about most, all in US dollars, so you can judge for yourself.

Key takeaways

Income tax: on a $250,000 income, US federal income tax takes about $51,300 a year before any state tax, while the UAE takes $0.

Living costs: one person spends about $2,840 a month in the US and $2,477 in the UAE, rent included, which is about $4,400 a year back in your pocket.

What you keep: after tax and a year of living costs, about $220,300 stays with you in the UAE against about $164,600 in the US.

Families: international primary school costs about $25,460 a year per child in the US and $12,531 in the UAE.

Safety: UAE residents rate walking alone at night 85 out of 100, while people in the US give it 44.

Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop from 12 US cities, and New York to Dubai takes about 12 hours 55 minutes.

1. Income tax: the UAE wins by about $51,300 a year

The UAE wins this one outright, because it does not levy income tax on individuals, while the US taxes the same paycheck at the federal level and then, in most states, again at the state level.

The IRS sets federal rates for 2026 that start at 10% and climb in steps to 37%, with each slice of income taxed at the rate for its own band, and a single filer’s standard deduction is $16,100. Picture a founder taking $250,000: after the deduction, $233,900 is taxable, and the federal bill comes to $51,304 a year, or about 20.5% of the whole income. On each extra $1,000 they earn, $320 goes to the IRS, because that slice of income sits in the 32% band.

That figure is the federal income tax alone. Most states add an income tax of their own, and Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes come on top of that, so the real bill is higher than the $51,304 shown here. State income tax is charged by the state where you live, so once your home is in Dubai there is no state bill waiting to replace it, although US citizens still file a federal return wherever they live. 2. Rent: the UAE is a little cheaper

The UAE comes out slightly ahead on rent. On Numbeo’s September 2026 prices a one-bedroom apartment in a city center averages $1,649 a month in the US and $1,527 in the UAE, about $122 less, while three bedrooms come to $2,662 against $2,684, which is level for families.

3. Everyday costs: the UAE wins by about $4,400 a year

The UAE also wins on day-to-day spending. One person’s everyday costs before rent come to about $1,191 a month in the US against $950 here, so with rent included the month costs about $2,840 in the US and $2,477 in the UAE.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is $10 instead of $20, dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is $54 instead of $80, a monthly transport pass is $48 instead of $65, and a dozen eggs is $3.12 instead of $4.31.

Families feel it more. A family of four spends about $4,290 a month before rent in the US and $3,337 in the UAE, and with a three-bedroom apartment in a city center the month comes to about $6,952 against $6,021, which is about $11,200 a year back in your pocket.

4. School fees: the UAE wins by $12,928 per child

For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference really opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about $25,460 per child in the US and $12,531 in the UAE, while a month of preschool runs about $1,453 in the US against $573 here. With two children in primary school that gap is about $25,900 a year, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: the UAE wins, and residents feel it

The UAE wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 13.7 against 49.2 in the US, roughly a quarter of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, UAE residents score it 85 out of 100 and people in the US 44.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.

6. What you keep: about $55,700 more in the UAE

Put tax and living costs together and the picture is clear. Take a single person on $250,000 who rents a one-bedroom apartment in a city center: after a year of tax and living costs they keep about $220,273 in the UAE and about $164,612 in the US, a gap of $55,661 in a single year, and that is before any state tax or payroll tax is counted on the US side. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above, because more of your income stays with you and the month costs less.
