A holding vehicle. Not a trading licence, and not a residence visa.
Offshore is genuinely useful for holding property, shares and intellectual property. It is also the structure most often mis-sold. Here is what it does, and what it will never do.
What offshore is genuinely good for
Holding UAE property
Owning designated freehold property through a company rather than personally, for succession and transfer reasons.
Holding shares
Sitting above operating companies as a clean parent entity, in the UAE or abroad.
Intellectual property
Ring-fencing trademarks, software or licensing rights away from the trading business.
Succession planning
Structuring ownership so assets transfer under company rules rather than through probate in several countries.
What we will ask you first
Whether you have taken tax advice in your country of residence. Offshore structures interact with controlled foreign company rules, economic substance requirements and reporting obligations that vary enormously by nationality. We are not tax advisers and will not pretend to be. We will happily introduce you to people who are.
Offshore questions
Does an offshore company give me a residence visa?
No. This is the single most common misunderstanding. Offshore companies are non-resident vehicles and carry no visa entitlement at all. If you need UAE residency, you need a free zone or mainland licence.
Can an offshore company trade in the UAE?
No. It cannot hold a UAE trade licence, cannot invoice UAE customers, and cannot rent commercial premises. It exists to hold assets, shares or intellectual property.
Can it open a UAE bank account?
Sometimes, but it is materially harder than for a licensed onshore company and several banks decline offshore structures outright. Anyone promising you an easy offshore account is overselling.
Is this a way to avoid tax?
No, and we will not present it that way. Where a company is tax resident generally depends on where it is managed and controlled, and your home country almost certainly has rules about controlled foreign companies. Get proper cross-border tax advice before using an offshore structure. We will refer you to advisers who do that work.
Then who is offshore actually right for?
People holding UAE property, holding shares in operating companies, ring-fencing intellectual property, or planning succession across jurisdictions. It is a holding tool, used alongside an onshore structure rather than instead of one.
Not sure offshore is what you need?
Most people who ask about offshore actually need a free zone licence. Six questions will tell you which.
