New YorkvsDubai
Taxes, Rent and Safety Compared 2026
Updated September 2026 · 6 minute read · Not tax, legal or immigration advice
Somewhere in Manhattan right now, a founder is paying more than $4,000 a month for a one-bedroom apartment and doing the tax math in their head, while a friend posts a Tuesday sunset from a Dubai rooftop. I have watched plenty of New Yorkers make the move since I arrived in Dubai in 2007, and when they sit down with me the conversation almost always comes back to three things: how much of their income they keep, what a normal month costs, and how it feels to walk home at night.
So rather than simply tell you Dubai is better, I have put the two cities head to head on the six things New Yorkers ask me about most, all in US dollars, so you can judge for yourself.
Key takeaways
Income tax: on $500,000, New York State and City take about $53,500 a year, while Dubai takes $0.
Living costs: one person spends about $6,114 a month in New York and $3,540 in Dubai, rent included, which is about $30,900 a year back in your pocket.
Families: international primary school costs about $60,589 a year per child in New York and $17,941 in Dubai.
Safety: Dubai residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100, while New Yorkers give it 46.
Getting home: Emirates flies nonstop from JFK every day in about 12 hours 55 minutes.

1. Income tax: Dubai wins by about $53,500 a year
Dubai wins this one outright, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals, while New York taxes the same paycheck three times.
The IRS sets federal rates for 2026 that start at 10% and climb in steps to 37%, with each slice of income taxed at the rate for its own band. New York State adds its own rates on top, running from 3.9% to 10.9% in 2026, and anyone living in the five boroughs pays New York City a further 3.078% to 3.876%.
Picture a founder with $500,000 of taxable income. On every extra $1,000 they earn, about $350 goes to the IRS, $68.50 to New York State and $38.76 to New York City, so roughly $457 of each $1,000 is gone before Social Security and Medicare are even counted. Across the full year, the state and city bill alone comes to about $53,500.

New York State and City income tax is charged on New York residents, so once your home is in Dubai there is no state or city line waiting to replace it. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
2. Rent: Dubai wins by about $2,000 a month
Dubai wins on rent, and by more than most people expect. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center averages $4,438 a month in New York and $2,396 in Dubai on Numbeo's September 2026 prices, so the same home costs about 46% less here. Step up to three bedrooms in the center and it becomes $9,242 against $4,513 a month, which is often the number that settles it for families.
3. Everyday costs: Dubai wins on every line
Dubai wins on day-to-day spending too. One person's everyday costs before rent come to about $1,676 a month in New York against $1,144 here, so with rent included the month costs roughly $6,114 in New York and $3,540 in Dubai.

The gap shows up in the small things, which is usually what new arrivals notice first. Lunch out costs about half, a monthly transport pass is $75 instead of $140, and even the closest line on the list, the gym, still comes in at $101 against $126.

4. School fees: Dubai wins by $42,648 per child
For families the biggest line on the budget is often school, and this is where the difference really opens up. A year at an international primary school costs about $60,589 per child in New York and $17,941 in Dubai, while full-day preschool runs around $3,366 a month in New York against about $859 here. With two children in school, that gap passes six figures within two years, which changes the whole question of what the move is worth.

5. Safety: Dubai wins, and residents feel it
Dubai wins clearly on safety. Its crime index, a score built from what residents report where lower means safer, sits at 16.2 against New York's 50.8, roughly a third of the level. One of the survey questions shows the gap best: asked how safe they feel walking alone at night, Dubai residents score it 83 out of 100 and New Yorkers 46.

For parents that shows up in how much freedom the children get, and for everyone else it shows up in how rarely you find yourself thinking about it.
6. Quality of life: Dubai scores 173 to New York's 136
Numbeo's quality of life index, which weighs safety alongside costs, healthcare, pollution and climate, puts Dubai at 173 and New York at 136. It is one number, but it lines up with everything above: more of your income stays with you, the month costs less, and the walk home feels safer.

You are still one flight from New York
Moving here does not mean leaving New York behind. Emirates flies nonstop between JFK and Dubai every day, and the flight from New York takes about 12 hours 55 minutes, so clients, family and a long weekend back home all stay within easy reach.
Who should make the move?
The founder earning well in Manhattan. If your taxable income runs into the hundreds of thousands, the state and city line alone is worth tens of thousands a year, and that is before rent.
The family weighing private school. Two children in international primary school cost about $85,300 a year less in Dubai, which changes the whole budget.
The business owner whose clients are already global. Your work travels with you, and a daily nonstop to JFK keeps New York close whenever you need it.
Questions New Yorkers ask me
Do Americans still pay US tax if they live in Dubai?
Yes, US citizens still file a federal return wherever they live. For 2026 the IRS lets you exclude up to $132,900 of pay earned from work done abroad if you qualify, under what is called the foreign earned income exclusion. This is not tax advice. Speak to a tax specialist in your home country.
Is Dubai cheaper than New York?
For one person, yes, by about $2,574 a month once rent is included, on Numbeo's September 2026 prices. Rent is the biggest single difference, and school fees widen the gap further for families.
Is Dubai safe for families?
Dubai's crime index is 16.2 against New York's 50.8, and residents rate walking alone at night 83 out of 100 compared with 46 in New York.
How long is the flight from New York to Dubai?
About 12 hours 55 minutes nonstop from JFK with Emirates, which flies the route every day.
Is moving to Dubai from New York worth it?
New York will always be New York. The real question is whether it is still giving you the life you are working so hard for, and if these numbers made you look twice, the next step is seeing what setting up your business in Dubai would cost.
